Why I study Japanese

Hello,

I am Harsh Sheth. As of Fall of 2019, I am a second year doctoral student under the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research department at Columbia University, and a budding student of the Japanese language who is loving every minute of it!

I was introduced to Japanese culture at a very early age through rewatching Naruto episodes when I was as little as 12 years old. However, I was only introduced to the Japanese language when I started watching those same Naruto episodes in Japanese at age 16. Since then, I have watched thousands of hours worth of anime, and have come to adore both the culture and the language.

I was able to pick up a few words and sentences here and there, however, I was deeply unsatisfied with how unstructured and limited knowledge of Japanese was. After failing to study Japanese during my undergrad, coupled with the fact that I had not picked up a new skill in ages, I decided it was high time to fulfill this long-standing dream before the opportunity slipped away forever.

So, here I am, finally preparing myself to write my own subtitles and translations to anime episodes and manga chapters! But it has not been an easy ride. With classes 4 days a week, the language lab on the 5th, and daily homework assignments and quizzes, this course is comfortably the most demanding course I am doing this semester, something my advisor would certainly not be happy about. Speaking I think I can manage just fine, since the sounds are very similar to those of the Indian languages; and it helps that I have been listening to Japanese for seven years, but the script is something I am very uncomfortable with. It is not uncommon for me to take 30-45 minutes per homework sheet, and even after all that, there are mistakes aplenty! My historically terrible handwriting does not do me any favours either, never thought I would have to worry about that again; nor did I think I would ever have to go back to using pencils! It's almost like I am ten years old again.

That's all from me for today, nice to meet you all!

  1. I am also an anime fanatic! I didn't completely finish Naruto episodes but I've been on that One Piece grind since I was a kid. We should have some movie nights as a class and watch animes together.

    2. I love the idea of watching anime together. I can't call myself a One Piece fan anymore as I haven't picked it up again since I caught up with the anime and manga back in 2014!
